Dammam is the capital of the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The judicial and administrative bodies of the province, plus several government departments, are located in the city. Dammam is the largest city in the Eastern Province, and the sixth largest in Saudi Arabia, after Riyadh, Jeddah, Mecca, Medina and Taif. Like the other 12 regional capitals of Saudi Arabia, Dammam is not included within any governorate; instead, it is governed as a "municipality" headed by a mayor.

Dammam is a major administrative center for the Saudi oil industry. Together with the nearby cities of Dhahran and Al Khobar, Dammam forms part of the Dammam Metropolitan Area, which is commonly known as greater Dammam and has an estimated population of 4,140,000 as of 2012. Dammam and its suburbs form the center of the Dammam metropolitan area, also known as Greater Dammam, which is closely linked to the city through social, economic, and cultural ties.

As of 2016 Greater Dammam is the 4th largest area in both size and population in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The Dammam metropolitan area and the rest of the Eastern Province are served by the King Fahd International Airport (KFIA), the largest airport in the world in terms of land area (approximately 780 km2), about 20 km to the northwest of the city. Dammam's King Abdul Aziz Sea Port is the largest on the Persian Gulf. Its import-export traffic in is second only to Jeddah Seaport in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).

Heritage Village

Visa Requirements

All visitors require a visa to enter Saudi Arabia, and visas are only granted to those with sponsorship in the country. Tourist visas are granted only to selected groups on a limited basis, and all visitors to Saudi Arabia are required to have a valid passport with at least six months validity, in addition to the appropriate visa and a return ticket, with all necessary documents.

Transportation

The fastest and most accessible way of getting around the city is by taking a taxicab. They’re hard to miss, since each taxi is white in color. And if getting by on bus, Most new buses are air conditioned and operated by the Saudi Arabian Public Transport Company. They conduct several routes around the city.

Language

The official language of Saudi Arabia is Arabic. The three main regional variants spoken by Saudis are Hejazi Arabic, Najdi Arabic, and Gulf Arabic. Saudi Sign Language is the principal language of the deaf community.

King Fahd International Airport

King Fahd International Airport (KFIA) is an airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia 20 kilometers (12 mi) northwest of Dammam, Saudi Arabia. The airport's basic infrastructure was complete by the end of 1990. The General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia finally opened the new Dammam King Fahd International Airport on 28 November 1999 to commercial traffic. The new Dammam airport serves most of Eastern Region of Saudi Arabia and in particular the growing urban complex made up of Dammam, Dhahran, Khobar, Qatif, Ras Tanura, while its catchment area also covers Jubail with total population of about 2.5 million served. The airport is the third major hub for Saudia, and furthermore was a hub for the now defunct Sama Airlines.

The terminal has six stories, three of which are allocated for passenger processing. The third level is for arrivals, the sixth level is for departures, and the fourth level is for boarding. There are two partial levels: the mezzanine service level and the mezzanine level (which is the uppermost level).

Services and amenities

  • Shops and other services: King Fahd International Airport was the first among Saudi Arabia's international airports to adopt duty-free stores. This area includes restaurants, cafeterias, and banks, and is located on the arrivals level.
  • The Mosque: The airport Mosque is built on the roof of the car park and in the middle of a landscaped area. It has an architectural design that combines modern style with the old Islamic style.
  • Hotel: A 250-room Hilton hotel is currently under construction and is expected to open late 2016 or early 2017. The hotel will be linked to the airport terminal by a pedestrian bridge to facilitate easy access to and from the hotel.
